In most of my work interviews, the first question I have been asked is the reason behind my maternity sabbatical. I get questions like, “how will you be able to manage work with your child in a nuclear set up?’
Even while getting flexibility to work remotely, I was offered to work for one fourth of the industry standards just because I was working from home (pre-covid world). While I struggled professionally to prove my efficiency and mettle, I witnessed my husband climbing the ladder of success all the while sharing load at home and yet strangely enough, no one seemed to question him or challenge his choices!
It makes me wonder, ‘Do we really put our words into action when it comes to celebrating women and empowering women?” Women empowerment does not mean writing quotes on their achievements and sacrifices. Or by celebrating one day in a year in the name of #womensday
It is high time we reflect, how are we supporting and encouraging women at work and home? Are we asking them to quit chasing their dreams or asking them to make compromises under the pretext of giving them a leverage? Are we truly as a society okay with women working with us with their kids while they tred the crucial work life balance? Are we accepting of them with all their physical, physiological and emotional differences both at workplaces and at home?
It’s time we stop glorifying all the struggles and compromises women go through to keep that job in tact or that relationship going. It’s time we acknowledge them for their worth along with and despite the other roles they play in life.
Help, support and encourage Women to achieve their dreams however huge or small they be. I am raising a future woman, telling her the world is a beautiful place, that she can be whatever she chooses to be in life if she puts her heart and hardwork into it. I desperately want to believe it’s true. However in the hearts of my heart, I am scared she will be heartbroken to see how far from reality the case is. For my daughter and for yours, let’s just not stick to mere words, let’s practice what we preach. let’s empower Women in its true sense, both at work and home.
Than it truly would be..
A Happy women’s Day!
